BBQ Chicken

BBQ Chicken, not only serves BBQ chicken, but they also have a wide array of chicken dishes, like fried chicken, chicken sandwiches, chicken burgers etc.

All their food is cooked with 100% Olive Oil! Hooray for health nuts!

Where? They have 5 outlets in every part of Singapore, from the North to the South to the East and West.

The food: I had the Jerk BBQ (yes, it's called Jerk). It was really good... it had a smokey flavour, and the chicken absorbed all the marinate, which made it really scrumptious.

The leg was served with fries and a lump of coleslaw. Which was not nice, as the fries tasted like those from the supermarkets.

But the good news is, they have a lunch promotion. For the price of an ala-carte dish, you get soup, a cup of soft-drink (of your choice) and a scoop of ice-cream. Worth the money!

Service? When I placed my order, I was was warned that it would be a 20 min wait. 20 min is a very long time, especially when you're really hungry! So if you're looking for fast food, this is not the place to go. (it takes them 20 min to prepare a chicken sandwish too)

Good food, long wait, resonable price.

Old School

Old chinese restaurant furniture, old chinese waiters, everything is old school about Red Star.

Old, but GOOD!

Where: Blk 54 Chin Swee Road#07-23Singapore 160054Tel: 6532 5266 / 6532 5103
My favourites:

Pheonix Feet (aka chicken feet)

The feet are cooked at the right temperature, and the right amount of time. The feet was soft, but still maintained bite. The sauce was a little spicy, and packed with a lot of punch.

Har Gao is a must have when having dim sum. The har gao here has a whole scrimp inside, unlike at certain places where they mix meat with bits of scrimp. However, I was rather disapointed during my last visit (in oct) as the skin of the har gao was too thick.

I LOVE the fried prawn dumplings! Crispy on the outside, and full of prawn goodness on the inside. Dip it in the salad sauce and gobble it up!

Another must have is the duck! Though a little expensive $12 for a small plate. But the duck's skin is so crispy, like peking ducks skin.
The meat is nice and salty, and not too oily.

These are my top 4 must haves at Red Star, but if you can stomach more, than eat everything you can get your hands on!

Service: In a traditional dim sum restaurant, ladies push trollies around. But here in Singapore, things are a little different. People tend to be impaitient, and instead of waiting for the trolley, they just walk right up to the trolley to help themselves. This causes some confusion, and delays the dim sum ladies.

I strongly encourage you to go on a weekday (non-public holiday), unless you wish to queue for about an hour.

Red Star is a MUST GO for any dim sum lover!

Timbre!

Timbre ( pronounced as Timber) is a chill out bistro which promotes local music.

Timbre @ The Arts House is a great place for after work relaxation, as it boost a picturesque view of Boat Quay, and soothing sounds from the resident bands, not forgetting the scrumptious thin crust pizzas and delightful drinks.

Where: Timbre @ The Arts House - 1 Old Parliment Lane, #01-04, Singapore 179429

Food: Their signature would have to be their thin crust pizzas, topped with generous amounts of cheese and the various ingredients, depending on the type of pizza you order.

My favourites would have to be the Pharma Ham and Rosemary, and the Classic Italian Pizza. (The pizzas are about 12 inches, and priced at $17). The saltiness of the toppings, marries well with the thin, crispy crust.

The tapas, are not too bad, I like the Buffalo wings, spicy enough, but not to the extent your lips will start swelling from the heat. The seafood platter contains calamari, prawns, mussels and potato wedges, the one complaint I have about this dish, is that calamari is like rubber, chewy and a little stale.

Drinks: Timbre has a wide array of beverages. My favourite would have to be Sakura ( Vodka, Lychee Liqueur, Lychee Juice and Ribena). Tastes like Lychee martini, except sweeter due to the ribena. It is a ladies drink.

I do have one big problem. They only serve one round of ice water, and it has to be ordered before 10pm. If anyone wants a glass of water more than once, or after 10pm, it is self service at the bar. Besides this, Timbre is a great place to relax and unwind.

Going Nuts about Donuts

Move aside Bubble tea, Get out of the way coffee buns, donuts are the new stars. I really wonder, why are sooooo many Sinagporeans all of a sudden crazy of donuts? I remember we use to have Dunkin Donuts in Singapore, then for a long time, donuts seem to have disappeared from our island till recently when any Singaporeans are going nuts about donuts. Waiting in line for 3 hours is it worth the wait????

It was 2pm on a weekday, where people should be in their offices typing away, doing work, but No, instead I saw many office workers waiting in a ridiculously long line for donuts. I am not against donuts, neither am i mad about them. At most I am only willing to wait 5min 3hours, I rather not eat, at least I can save my money, and won't need to pile on the extra pounds. How long can donuts retain their new found fame, or will they have to make way for a new star?? who knows.

Okay so I could not resist but try out some donuts myself.

The most recent one I had was from Munchy Donuts.

To tell you the truth, I can't tell the difference between donuts I have tried, the only difference is the flavours. My Fave ones from Munchy are the Silly-mon (cinnamon on white chocolate) and the Oreo one. I don't really fancy those with cream in the centre, makes the donuts extremey sweet. The reason I went to try Munchy donuts is because 8-days said Munchy was No. 1 (the power of media -.-)

Kim Gary...

I ate at Kim Gary just yesterday. Kim Gary is a chain of restaurants, some of which are Hong Kong Cafes, others serve Korean or other cuisines. They can be found in Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong.

I patronized the one at Vivocity. (Hong Kong Kim Gary Restaurant)

Where? #02-218 VivoCity, 1 HarbourFront Walk.

The food: I had a pork chop baked rice, which was served in a Bamboo basket (those dim sum ones). It was quite tasty, but not my favorite baked rice. The pork was a little tough, had a hard time biting into it. I had one with cream sauce, and the sauce had corn in it, in fact, majority of the dishes on the menu had corn, corn and more corn, wonder why. I tried some of the Black Pepper beef sauce, and did not like it, it did not have a black peppery taste, tasted more like a black bean sauce.

The french toast had peanut butter in between, loads of maple syrup and butter, I felt i was just eating bread soaked in butter, it was too oily but otherwise nice.

My friend had the peanut butter, condensed milk toast, tooooo sweet!
The servers mostly speak mandarin so if you don't know mandarin then .....
Verdict? Just an okay place with okay food.

Side Track

Let me just side track today, away from food. I recently watched a movie entitled "Ghosts"

The show is not about any man/woman dressing up and popping out of TV screens and scaring people. Ghost is what those Chinese immigrants call the English.

In a nutshell:

Its about a lady name Ai Xin who goes to England illegally in search providing a better life for a young son back home in China. Her Journey from China to England takes a long 6 months, and when she is there, things didn't turn out the way she expected. About 10-12 china immigrants like Ai xin, had to live in a tiny house. She had to sleep on the mattress in a small room with 4 other guys.( her rent was 25 euros per week) Anyway, so this group of people had to bribe workers at the employment agencies for a job. ....... As the movie goes...... One day the group went to pick cockles, and those english who were also there spat in their faces, kicked them, punched them, and scattered all the cockles they had worked so hard to pick.....

Like back home, here in Singapore, I believe such unfairness is happening as well. Like those foreign workers who have to work from dawn to dark under the blazing sky, and receive so little pay. And to go back to their cramped up quarters with hardly any room to walk :(
Its also about discrimination. Some Caucasians still feel to this day that they are much superior as compared to us Asians :( sad
Well no idea what am I trying to achieve by writting(typing) this out???? But I just felt like it :) Cya soon muacks

The End?

My mum brought back some awfully chocolate cake from her office, and guess what? it was AWFULly Chocolate. No Idea why people still patronize the store, maybe it's because they haven't tried anything better.

Cheng Tng is today's topic. My favourite one can be found at the Bedok Food Centre. ( Near the old army camp) It's D-Lish.
Unlike those that are sold in majority of food courts/coffeshops, which are dark brown in colour, this is lighter in colour. And they are generous with the ingredients, and not too sweet.
Yellow Sweet potatoes, Dried Persimmions, Lotus Seeds, Melon Sugar, Barley, Sago Balls, Dried Logans, and lots of those brown Cheng Tng thing that floats around?? lol However, I would have preferred if they added more dried logans.
The store only sells cheng tng, so don't expect the wide array of dessert choices like many other dessert stores. O there is a stall next to this cheng tng stall that I think belongs to the same person, and they sell cuttlefish Kangkong.

I want to eat at The Line!!! Any sponsers? haha

Feasting.

Well buffets are mostly not so affordable, in other words there are EXPENSIVE. The good ones range from $50 to $100++++, and well if you want to go for the affordable ones priced $26++ to about $40+++, well don't expect too much. Thats my opinion, if you beg to differ, do recommend some affordable yet delish places.

So, as I have only eaten buffets at a couple of places, I can't state my favourites, but here is how I feel about the buffets that I have pigged out at.

(in random order)

I just ate at Carnivore last Friday here are my views.
Here at Carnivore, they keep to the traditional Brazilian serving method: where the "meat cutters" or passadors (that's what they are called) slice chucks of food mostly meat at your table. The serve different parts of the cow, chicken, bacon, honey ham, fish, pork, pineapples and garlic bread. O and they have a salad bar too. My parents love the beef that was cooked 6 hours, think it's the cow's hump. My mum was so full but she could not turn down the offer for more hump. The meat was tender and soft (cause it was cooked for 6h) , a bit fatty, the skin was crispy and a little charred which made it even better, ahaha I liked the chicken, the meat was tender and flavourfull, and the skin was thin and crispy. Hmmm the pineapple was so juicy and sweet. The staff was efficient, they fill up your glass once it is half full.

The not so good thing is that at the beginning, the server who was trying to explain to us how their system works, and what are the different kinds of meat they offered was talking toooooooooo fast, that I hardly caught a thing she said. And as the food was mainly meat, meat and more meat, I was stuffed real quickly.

Where? I visted the one at Vivocity, they have other outlet at Chijmes. O and majorityof the passadors are Brazilian.

Thanks to a good friend and her generous family, my friends and I got to dine at Carousel located in Royal Plaza Hotel at Scotts Road.
It coats $49++ for dinner which I think is rather affordale for a hotel buffet.
Food wise? It is an international buffet so you ca expect anything from Thai beef ball noodles to Chicken rice to pasta etc. The food is delicious and service is good. (of cause it has to be good, its $50 per person!)
Know what I lurvve about buffets? Desserts!!!!!!!!!!!!
They offer a number of puddings, a chocolate fountain with a variety of fruits and sweet stuff, and lots of triffles. and guess what? A friend and I tried every single dessert they had to offer.
Haha after dinner, i could not even get up to work to the toilet.
O my, I'm adding on to the already exsiting large amount of pounds. 100kg, here I come.
Okay
Sakura International Buffet they offer a wide variety of food, such as sushi, sashimi, seafood, meats, dim sum, desserts etc. Price wise, its about 26++ per person? Not too sure (cause I don't pay) haha. They have a little of evrything, so don't expect a wide range of sushi or dim sum. Taste? Ordinary. O and they have a lobster salad as well, zzzzzz I saw people picking all the lobsters, so don't be surprised if you can only find fruit in the "lobster" salad. I don't have much to say about this place, or more likely I don't know what to say. Just that It's worth a try.

Where? They have an outlet at Safra Tampines, Marine Parade, Toa Payoh. But I heard the one at Tampines is the best.

Snack Attack!

So, my mum says I'm fat cause I snack to much. To Mum: I'm not fat, I'm voluptuous. Haha lol

Anyway so today I'll be posting a few snacks enjoy, and will be adding more as soon as I find some new snacks worthy of writhing about.

Oreo cookies, oreo waffle bars and now... Oreo chocolate bars. I just tried it a few days ago, and it was I must say different from the other oreo products. It is a chocolate bar, inside is crushed Oreo bits. It tasted like a chocolate bar, but you can't really taste the Oreo. But it was nice. I prefer this to the oreo waffle bar, which I don't really fancy, as it tastes like an ordinary waffle bar, emmm something like the apollo waffle. This new product can be found in any major supermarkets, as it is imported from Japan, (notice the Japanese words on the yellow banner on the wrapper?) it is more costly, about $5 to $6 for a packet of about 20.

Haha okay I know this does not look appetizing. But trust me, It's yum-me. Chocolate in between 2 Graham cookies. As I keep them in the fridge and I have braces, It's kinda difficult for me to bite into the cookie, cause it's pretty hard, but otherwise nice. It's different from other cookies I have tasted, nothing like any Famous Amos cookies or subway ones. Maybe I should introduce this to Mr Cookie Monster. This can be found at IKEA, where they sell all the other Swedish food products. It is $7 a box of many cookies. (however, the cookies look a bit messy, but o well, you can't always have the cake and eat it right?)

That's all for now, will be back with more snacks as soon as I try more new ones and put on ore pounds :(

Cluck, Cluck

I'm sure everyone has their own favourite chicken rice stall. Mine?

5 Star Hainanese Chicken Rice!

Where? Located on the stretch on shops opposite Katong Mall.
Pardon me for the blur and ugly map I have drawn :(
The box at the bottom left hand corner is katong mall.
The blue lines represent the shops
The red lines show the way to the shop
and X marks the spot.

So what's nice about this stall? Hmmm, the rice is very flavourfull, you can eat it on it's own. The chicken is not fatty at all. (I hate fatty chicken yewww) Unlike some stalls, their chicken hardly contains any meat at all, only fats, fats and more fats :P I can't really find the words to discribe it, so go try it, you won't regret it.
